What the Septuagint is
Before Christ, Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek. That translation, the Septuagint, became the Bible of the early Church.
When the Apostles quote the Old Testament, they most often quote the Septuagint. The Fathers read it, the services are built from it, and the Orthodox Church reads it still. Where it differs from the Hebrew text behind most English Bibles, an Orthodox Christian hears the words the Church has always sung.
The Lord tends me as a shepherd, and I shall want nothing.
Every book the Church reads
Besides the books found in every Bible, the Septuagint carries books the Orthodox Church reads and Protestant Bibles leave out. They are all in the app.

- Wisdom
- Sirach
- Baruch
- 1 Maccabees
- 2 Maccabees
- 3 Maccabees
- 4 Maccabees
- 1 Esdras
- Prayer of Manasseh

Psalm numbers in the Septuagint
The app numbers the psalms as the Septuagint and the Church do. If you know a psalm by its number in another Bible, this table finds it.

| 1 to 8 | 1 to 8 |
| 9 | 9 and 10 |
| 10 to 112 | 11 to 113 |
| 113 | 114 and 115 |
| 114 and 115 | 116 |
| 116 to 145 | 117 to 146 |

Questions
What is the Septuagint?
The Septuagint is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, made by Jewish scholars in the last centuries before Christ. Its name, from the Latin for seventy, recalls the tradition of seventy translators. It is the Old Testament most often quoted in the New Testament, and the Old Testament of the Orthodox Church.
Which English translation of the Septuagint does the app use?
Sir Lancelot Brenton's translation, first published in 1844, which is in the public domain. The New Testament is the King James Version.
Does it include the deuterocanonical books?
Yes. Alongside the books found in every Bible, the app includes Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1 to 4 Maccabees, 1 Esdras, the Prayer of Manasseh and Psalm 151.
Why are the psalm numbers different?
The Septuagint divides a few psalms differently from the Hebrew text, so from Psalm 10 to Psalm 147 its number is usually one lower. Psalm 23 in most English Bibles is Psalm 22 in the Septuagint, and Psalm 51 is Psalm 50. The app uses the Septuagint numbers, as the Church does.
Is the Septuagint free in the app?
Yes, the whole Bible is free, for good, with no account and no ads.
